Petitioning the Board

It’s crazy how quickly this project has gained steam, and it definitely helped that others have been pushing for it for years. But, from attending a single board meeting at the beginning of July, it feels like we have made real progress towards making the skatepark a reality. I have been overwhelmed by the positive responses as I talk to anyone and everyone about what we’re trying to do and it seems everyone agrees: RUTLAND NEEDS THIS!

Of course, it will not be a fast process and there is much work to be done. Realistically, building the park we want will cost upwards of $300,000. We have started small with a GoFundMe (DONATE PLEASE!) and plan to expand our bankroll by tapping local businesses and larger corporate donors.

We will be throwing fundraising events including a ramp jam at Darkside later in the summer and plan to launch an online silent auction as well. Please contact me if you’d like to donate products or services. We have T-shirts and stickers in the works, and will continue to build on the momentum.

After attending two meetings to speak of the importance of this project, the Board of Alderman and Rutland City Mayor Mike Doenges have been receptive and supportive of these efforts. A Rec Committee meeting to discuss the skatepark will take place in early August and all members of the community are encouraged to attend.

Currently, a location has not been determined. This is the biggest hurdle to overcome, but we have been assured that it is something the city is working with the Rutland Recreation department on securing.

Lastly, we are saddened that the temporary ramp set up at White’s Pool was removed, and hope to work out a temporary solution with the Rec Department this summer. Until then, looks like we’ll have to travel to nearby Manchester to enjoy their glorious new park, take advantage of the mini ramps in Wallingford and at the Darkside in Killington, or of course, take it to the streets!
